Owl Wood Journal - Away with the Fairies

I can't deny that I am totally caught up in the process of making
 Owl Wood Journal,
which is really difficult as I am also being enticed outdoors
by the fine weather.

This is the page I am working on at the moment.
The page is evolving, with extra fairies and woodland creatures which demand to be fitted in.
It is very simple, definitely not well executed, but goodness is it fun to do!
Another week of snatched time should see this one completed.
I already have plans for the next couple of pages.
The whole point of the journal is to remind the grandchildren of the happy times we spend in Owl Wood,
so, big wild bears and wolves must feature,
as must dragons, knights
and horses.

Sir Harry and Lady Francesca playing on 'The Standing Stone'
I have decided that I'll paint some pictures
and George has kindly agreed to write the words.
He is, after all, the spinner of tales.

I have an old fashioned manual typewriter
so I'll type his words
and stick them into the journal.
It should add to the battered
and worn
look which I am trying to create.

Meanwhile, the gardens are looking so much better after all our hard work.
The lawns have been mowed, and mowed again.
Weeds have been uprooted
edges trimmed,
vegetable beds dug over
and the polytunnel has been cleaned and organised
with lots of seedlings growing happily
promising much.
The cats spend their days lolling around in there,
when they are not out hunting.

The spring flowers are quite wonderful
the colours amazing.

I wish I could be disciplined enough to settle for just one colour
and create, say,  a white flower garden
but I love lots of colour
from soft and subtle to the bright and zingy.
They make me happy.

The cauliflowers are doing well

and the PSB continues to flourish.

    1. Hi Dom, You are very kind. I'm doing it for the grandchildren, but right now it feels like pure self-indulgence (is self-indulgence, I admit!) because I can be as whimsical and sentimental as I like on this page!

  2. What a treasure the book is going to be when completed.
I love all the seasons, but Spring holds such promise, even if it does involve a lot of hard work preparing and planting. Our greenhouse is full of seedlings, and the potatoes and broad beans are in the front garden.

    1. Hi Scarlet, Isn't it marvellous to get those seedlings ready, knowing that they hold the promise of good food for the future. Your Head Gardener is a pretty amazing man, although I am sure it is also down to his able assistant!

  3. A new career... childrens author and illustrator? Arthur Rackham eat your heart out!

    Elaine, do your wallflowers self-seed?

    1. Hi LL, The wallflowers simply do their own thing - I have three clumps which are gradually expanding. One of them has a wonderful perfume and they all have very strong colours. They are a marvellous plant, remind me of my childhood.

  4. I've been searching for a suitable tree for a small door; no luck so far, but I'll find one.

    1. Hi Cro, On the old PTL blog I did a post about fairy doors. I had quite forgotten about it. I hope you soon find your tree.

    1. Hi Jane, The trouble is, I know how these family treasures so often end up forgotten and popped in with a job lot of books for auction, years down the line.

  6. Oh, the fairies. That wouldn't be Francesca peeping about the tree, would it?

    1. Hi JOanne, You are spot on! As I painted the fairies she was the one I named Francesca - possibly something to do with Frankie's love of pink!

  7. I adore Bramble Rambles! I think there should always be a little fantasy blended in with the reality. Have a great weekend. Bonnie

    1. Hi Bonnie, I hope your weekend has been a wonderful one too. I agree, it is important to weave a little fantasy into the ordinary, it is amazing how much work we can get out of the grandchildren that way. ;-)

  8. "Simple" ? "... definitely not well executed..." ??? You sell yourself shirt. This is beyond well-executed. It's brilliant, beautiful, and charming. And it shares a magical Owl Wood with everyone... not just the grandkids. I hope you'll publish this when it's done. It would become an immediate classic.

    1. Hi Mitch, I must print this comment out, you do wonders for my self-esteem! It has taken me 60 years to realise that it doesn't have to be perfect, it simply has to come from the heart. Then that little patch of woodland becomes a magical kingdom.

    2. Elaine:
And I mean it sincerely. What you've been creating is pure magic. I would love to own a copy that I could pass on to my grand-nephew and -nieces. And I wish I had the talent and the inspiration to create something so wonderful.

  10. I started that idea with my grandson, who like George, is a "spinner of tales"--such an imagination he has! We call ours Dogwood Forest and it has Knights and dragons, but also very friendly animals too! XOXO

    1. Hi Susan, Dogwood Forest sounds my kind of place...I bet it is also filled with exquisite flowers! I like the friendly animals much more than the wild and hungry beasts! Grandchildren certainly force one to use that storyteller muscle.xx

    1. Hi Dawn, It is such a lot of fun, I wish I had thought to create one as my own children grew up...although I guess I was probably too busy at that time. Age has advantages!

  12. The Owl Wood Journal is such a beautiful treasure! Your precious grandchildren will adore it for many years to come, I know! They look like they live a fairytale life in your wood, and capturing your stories for them is such a wonderful thing to do! You are a sweet, dear Grandmother! And I adore your beautiful spring flowers as well. Wonderful post!

    1. Hi Marie, You are very kind. The grandchildren love our little patch of woodland right now; I know that will change as they grow older and they begin to see it as just a field of trees! I just hope that this journal will capture the essence of the magic and fun and that they will remember happy times.
